19th Century Jugs 19th century jugs or pitchers, as we call them in the States, are made in basically two ways. They can be thrown on a wheel, or they can be molded in a plaster of Paris mold. If a thrown jug has relief, the sprigging (as it is called) is molded separately and then "stuck" on the thrown piece with liquid clay. This is a separate category on my website called "sprigged jugs". If the jugs are molded and have design in relief, this relief can be molded at the same time as the basic body and are listed in my website as "Relief-molded jugs". If the pattern is not in relief, the jugs can be either transfer-printed or hand painted. Transfer printed jug are another separate category. All other jugs are in this category, "19th century jugs", and consist mainly of hand painted items. |
