Gaudy Welsh Gaudy Welsh pottery was made in the British Isles and shipped to the United States to be sold to the poor, immigrant, German people who settled primarily in Pennsylvania (the Pennsylvania Dutch). It was designed with strong colors, underglaze cobalt blue and over glaze burnt orange, rust and green. Because the greens and oranges were over glaze, one often finds that they are worn, while the underglaze blues are still in good condition. Except for a couple of instances, the pieces are always trimmed in copper lustre. If the item is trimmed in gold, it is Gaudy Ironstone. Gaudy Welsh was made from about 1820 - 1860 in as many as 300 patterns. |
