Mugs English, straight sided mugs came in all sizes and were used for several different purposes, all the way from the sometimes large Loving cup to the little children's mug. The loving cup had two handles so that the lovers could lift it together. The children's mug, having a sturdy base, made it easy for the child to drink without spilling. Large coffee mugs allowed large amounts of coffee to be served at one time. One other type of mug was the Coffee Can. This was like a child's mug in that it was small, and because it did not flare out at the top, it kept the coffee hotter. The Georgians used this coffee can in a deep saucer, and they would pour small amounts of the coffee into the saucer to drink, leaving that in the can to stay hot. I know about this as my grandfather, a good Scotsman of the 19th century, drank his coffee this way. |
