Tureens

There are basically two types of tureens, soup tureens and sauce tureens. The soup tureen is a larger, deep earthenware, stoneware or silver vessel for serving soup. It is oval in shape, with a loop handle at each end, and a domed lid. There is usually a small hole at the edge of the lid for the handle of the ladle. The sauce tureen is just a smaller version of the soup tureen. In the late 18th century tureens often took the form of classical urns, resting on a high under plate. These were very elegant pieces for the Georgian table.
